On my smartphone, I typed in “cat sat on keyboard now screen is black” and found a solution to my problem (see below). Photography ©Drazen | Getty Images.Īs I do with all tech questions I have, I went to Google.

Finding answers to tech problems A lot of cat owners go online in search of IT help when their cats put them in a tech crisis. I tried jiggling my mouse, hit the space bar, frantically pounded on the ESC key. I didn’t get a panicky feeling in my chest until after I’d removed her from the laptop and couldn’t get my screen back. She was hungry and, deadline be damned, wanted to be fed NOW.

(This is always a last resort, but a DISTANT one, as it (a) will take a lot of your time and (b) it rarely restores your drive(s) to 100% of what they looked like and how they worked for you.As I worked on my laptop, my cat leaped up and placed her furry black butt on my keyboard. Without seeing your laptop, I have to say that there`s a reasonable chance of one of the following: (1) your registry has crosslinks, preventing correct "mapping" of the codes that the operating system uses to identify what you mean when you hit a key: in this case, you could download and install freeware (I use - ) that allows you to cleanup both your temp files and your registry crosslinks or (2) your keyboad itself is damaged: in this case, you will need a replacement keyboard, which usually can easily be replaced by Aer (if your laptop is still under warranty) or purchased online directly from Acer and installed by you yourself (you could also purchase a USB-cabled keyboard and use that, especially if your laptop is no longer under warranty, since non-covered repairs can be very pricey) or (3) this is very unlikely, but your operating system is damaged and cannot be repaired by CCleaner: in this case, you should back up your drive(s), wipe the operating system, and re-install everything.
